RM12.47 Million in Cryptocurrency Vanishes From Malaysian Man’s Wallet
Abstract:A 38-year-old man in Teluk Intan, Perak, has reportedly lost approximately RM12.47 million in cryptocurrency after his digital assets were transferred from his electronic wallet without his knowledge or authorisation, triggering a police investigation into one of the more substantial reported cases of unauthorised cryptocurrency transfers in Malaysia.

A 38-year-old man in Teluk Intan, Perak, has reportedly lost approximately RM12.47 million in cryptocurrency after his digital assets were transferred from his electronic wallet without his knowledge or authorisation, triggering a police investigation into one of the more substantial reported cases of unauthorised cryptocurrency transfers in Malaysia.
According to Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi, the victim discovered the suspicious transfer at approximately 1pm on October 9 while he was in Teluk Intan. Preliminary investigations revealed that the cryptocurrency had been moved through a blockchain transaction, although the circumstances surrounding the unauthorised transfer remain under investigation.
The reported loss of RM12.47 million highlights the potentially devastating financial consequences of compromised cryptocurrency wallets, where substantial amounts of wealth can disappear through digital transactions before their owners become aware of the breach.
Police Launch Investigation Into Missing Millions
Malaysian authorities have initiated an investigation to identify those responsible for the unauthorised transfer and determine where the cryptocurrency was sent.
Mohd Alwi confirmed that Perak police are working with the Commercial Crime Investigation Department at Bukit Aman to trace the movement of the funds and establish the identities of individuals potentially involved in the incident.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which concerns cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property.
Authorities have not disclosed how the victim's wallet was accessed, whether his private credentials were compromised, or whether the incident involved a sophisticated cyberattack. No arrests or recovery of the missing cryptocurrency were announced in the initial police statement.
Police Warn Cryptocurrency Investors Against Security Threats
Following the incident, police urged cryptocurrency investors and electronic wallet users to exercise greater caution when managing their digital assets.
Authorities specifically warned against clicking suspicious links or disclosing sensitive wallet information, including seed phrases, private keys and passwords. Such credentials can provide access to cryptocurrency holdings, potentially allowing unauthorised parties to transfer assets without the owner's consent.
Police also advised users to regularly review their wallet security settings and act immediately if they suspect their accounts have been compromised.
Recommended precautions include discontinuing the use of potentially affected devices, preserving electronic evidence, contacting wallet service providers through official channels and filing police reports.
