A 65-year-old former school principal in Pahang has lost more than RM1.1 million in a suspected investment scam promoted through TikTok, after committing his personal savings, selling land and taking out loans to finance what he believed was a legitimate investment opportunity.
According to Pahang acting police chief Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob, the victim encountered an investment advertisement on TikTok on June 21, 2026, under an account using the name Network 1 Agency Sdn Bhd.
He subsequently communicated through WhatsApp with an individual claiming to represent the company.
What began as an online investment enquiry eventually resulted in substantial financial losses, with the former educator transferring money through multiple banking channels over several weeks.
Police investigations revealed that the victim conducted 22 financial transactions between August 21 and October 7, using online banking services and transactions at bank counters in Pekan and Kuantan.
The funds reportedly came from several sources, including his savings, proceeds from the sale of land and money obtained through loans.
The involvement of borrowed funds makes the case particularly concerning because the financial consequences may extend beyond the immediate investment losses.
Unlike an investor who loses only available savings, someone who borrows to finance a fraudulent scheme may remain responsible for repaying outstanding debts even after the invested money disappears.
The former principal lodged a police report on October 10 after discovering that he had allegedly been deceived.
Authorities are treating the incident as a suspected investment scam.
