CMC Markets Extends US Share Trading Into Overnight Session
Abstract:CMC Markets has extended US share trading on CMC Invest into overnight hours, adding fractional-share and market-order access as longer trading sessions become more common in the retail market.

CMC Markets has extended US share trading on its UK investing platform into the overnight session, bringing the service onto a 24/5 schedule.
The change also applies to fractional shares, while market orders can be submitted outside the regular New York session.
The move comes as longer US trading hours continue to spread across the retail brokerage market, reducing the traditional gap between the US market close and the following session.
Overnight Trading Moves Further Into the Retail Market
Extended-hours trading is no longer limited to the periods immediately before and after the main US session.
A growing number of retail platforms have been pushing further into overnight trading, particularly for heavily traded US shares and ETFs.
CMC Markets had already expanded extended-hours access across thousands of US securities. The latest change adds the remaining overnight window to its UK investing service.
One notable part of the update is the use of market orders during that session. Overnight markets generally operate with lower trading activity than the main US session, and some venues place tighter restrictions on the types of orders accepted.
Longer Hours Come With Different Market Conditions
Access outside regular hours does not mean trading conditions remain the same throughout the day.
Liquidity is usually thinner overnight, while bid-ask spreads can be wider and prices may react more sharply when fewer orders are available.
That difference becomes particularly relevant around earnings releases or company announcements published after the US closing bell, when prices can move before the main market reopens.
The new schedule gives orders access to those periods, but execution still depends on the liquidity available during the overnight session.
Trading Remains Commission-Free, but FX Costs Apply
CMC Invest continues to list share dealing at 0% commission.
For UK accounts buying US securities, however, currency conversion remains a separate cost. Published rates show FX spreads of up to 0.99% depending on the account plan, with lower rates available on paid tiers.
The overnight expansion does not change those existing currency-conversion charges.
The latest change adds another example of US market hours extending further into the traditional overnight period, with retail trading increasingly moving toward near-continuous weekday access.
