Man Sells His House to Invest, Only to Lose RM132,590 in Forex Scam

A 73-year-old Malaysian retiree lost RM132,590 in a suspected foreign exchange investment scam, with part of the money reportedly coming from selling his house.
The victim, from Teluk Intan, Perak, was allegedly persuaded to participate in a forex investment arrangement that promised substantial financial returns. What initially appeared to be an opportunity to increase his savings ultimately resulted in the disappearance of his investment capital.
According to Hilir Perak district police chief ACP Chua Kok Lian, the retiree was introduced to the investment opportunity by an acquaintance, rather than through an unsolicited advertisement or an unfamiliar online platform.
The personal connection appears to have played an important role in encouraging the victim to consider the scheme indicating how suspected investment fraud can spread through existing social relationships.
Police investigations revealed that the retiree began participating in the scheme on July 4, 2026, subsequently transferring funds in several stages over approximately two months.
By the time the alleged fraud became apparent, his total investment had reached RM132,590.
The situation deteriorated on 14th September, when the victim discovered that he could no longer access the investment system. Despite having committed a significant amount of money, he had received neither the promised profits nor any repayment of his original capital.
Authorities received a police report concerning the incident on 19th October, prompting an investigation into the individuals responsible for the suspected scheme.
While currency trading is a recognised financial activity, promises of unusually high or guaranteed profits should invite closer scrutiny, particularly when the investment operator's regulatory status cannot be independently verified.
For Malaysian investors, the incident reinforces the importance of conducting independent checks before transferring money to any forex broker, investment platform or individual claiming to offer exceptional returns. WikiFX also provides broker information that investors can use as part of their preliminary research, although such information should not replace verification with official regulators.
