In my experience using Topstep, I found that their offering is quite specialized: they focus exclusively on futures contracts, rather than the wide assortment of instruments like spot forex, stocks, indices, or cryptocurrencies that many brokerage firms provide. Specifically, Topstep gives traders access to CME equity futures, forex futures, agricultural futures, energy futures, metals, and interest rate futures. This means, for me, traditional spot forex pairs, equities, stock indices, crypto assets, and options are not available through Topstep. The reason for this focus likely lies in their business model as a proprietary trading firm, rather than a conventional broker. They structure access around their Trading Combine®, where traders must first demonstrate profitability in a simulated environment with futures products. In my assessment, this concentrated futures-only approach caters to those who are comfortable and experienced in the futures markets, particularly on U.S. exchanges, and the available range covers major asset classes within those futures—equity indices, commodities, currencies (as futures), and interest rates. However, for those like myself who sometimes diversify into spot FX, stocks, or digital assets, Topstep’s offerings are limiting. It’s also important to note that because Topstep is not regulated and only provides live trading after a successful evaluation, it might not suit traders seeking diversified access under established regulatory protections. For specialized futures trading, though, the platform covers the essential categories.
